Achieving Your Goal

Almost everyone struggles at some point or another with reaching their workout goals. It’s usually because we stop doing what we need to do to get there. The key is consistency. You can work super hard when you get to the gym, but if you only go a couple of times every 2 weeks, you’ll be disappointed. There are some things you can do to keep yourself on track. Keep your goal in sight. I used to hear that all the time and brush it off, thinking “That doesn’t make a big difference.” |
Oddly, though, it does. Let’s say I have a competition coming up on July 21st. I work hard, do my cardio and eat clean. A day will come where I don’t feel like working out. I’ll go anyway. On several mornings, I won’t want to get up at 6am and do cardio. I’ll do it anyway. The reason is because July 21st will arrive whether I train for it or not. I’ll train for it. This is because I when July 21st arrives, I have to get on stage in front of 300+ people in a bikini and heels and even if I don’t win, I want to look a certain way. Life happens, and we all miss a workout, or eat something that we shouldn’t.
But because I have this goal date in sight, I know that with each Krispy Kreme that I eat, I am knowingly and consciously consuming unnecessary fat and taking a step or two away from my goal. With each workout that I miss just because I don’t feel like it, I am knowingly and consciously neglecting muscles that should be worked, or allowing fat to stay when it should be burned. This, of course, makes it harder to “fall off the wagon.” Obviously, everyone is different. Some goals are about looking better; some are about feeling better and getting healthy (a wonderful side effect to good fitness).
- Choose your goal. This is the easy part. Just make it reasonable for the time frame you are going to choose.
- Pick a serious date. Not something you can easily blow off. Maybe it’s a class reunion, maybe it’s a wedding. Maybe it’s a get together. Maybe you bought a dress that you wouldn’t dare wear until you reach your goal. Pick a day to wear it and write it on your calendar.
- Keep your goal in sight – literally. Put it on the fridge if eating is the problem. This will help to generate consistency, which gets you your results.
I tell everyone this: If you make good choices everyday, you will succeed. It is about the little things here. You can’t run a mile without taking the first step. Don’t neglect the everyday decisions that get you to the finish line!
