Why Everyone Should Exercise

Everyone should exercise! It only makes sense. Exercise benefits your health. However, if you do exercise and experience chest pain, dizziness, extreme shortness of breath, persistent pain in your legs or joints while exercising, or any other physical condition that just doesn’t seem right, this may indicate a problem. Stop exercising and see your doctor before continuing. Assuming you are healthy, regular physical activity has many benefits other than making you fit. |
| | High Blood Sugar – Physical exercising improves insulin sensitivity, thus improves the body’s ability to control blood sugar. Exercise can help prevent or control diabetes. | |
| | Heart Health – After analyzing 43 scientific studies of physical inactivity and heart disease, it was found that people who were inactive, on average, developed heart disease twice as often as active people. Inactivity increases the risk of obesity, high blood fat levels, high blood pressure and the blood is more likely to clot. (See article: Protect Your Body's Engine - The Heart) | |
| | Osteoporosis – Regular aerobic and strength exercise prevents calcium loss from bones. Regular exercise is essential for good bone strength which prevents osteoporosis. | |
| | Weight Control – Exercise is essential at helping to prevent excess body fat by burning calories and building lean tissue (muscle mass). The less body fat the body has, the less calories have to be burned to maintain weight. People that are fit burn more calories even at rest. (See article: How To Determine Your Healthy Weight) | |
| | Mental Health – People that are fit tend to have better self image, feel better physically, have more energy and tire less often. Many research studies show that physical activity relates to mental health. Some studies have shown that physical exertion increases endorphin levels in the brain to improve one’s mood. (See article: Exercise Can Help Ease Depression) | |
| | Cancer Risk – In a study that included 110,000 people with years of observation, people who were inactive and unfit had four times the risk of getting cancer, compared to people who were physically fit. (See articles: Cancer and Exercise and Steps You Can Take To Prevent Cancer) | |
| | Longevity – There is much evidence that regular exercise increases longevity. In one study overall mortality rates were 3.4 times higher in unfit people when compared to physically fit people. In the Harvard Alumni Study, researches found that, on average, for every one hour of vigorous exercise increased longevity by two hours. However, in recent studies, any regular, moderate activity is very beneficial to your health. |
