![]() | Nintendo is planning to enter the fitness arena using its very popular Wii game console. The company is working on a program tentatively called "Wii Fit" that will hit the market the first half of 2008. Wii Fit is designed to build on the sweat inducing success of Wii Sports. The sports games are controlled by moving around a motion-sensing remote control instead of a joystick with buttons. So for a tennis game, players actually stand before the TV screen and use the control as a tennis racket. As a result, players burn calories because they are actually moving around instead of sitting down with a joystick and just moving their fingers. |
The future Wii Fit game will use a new peripheral device which is a weight sensing Wii Balance Board that players will stand on while on screen instructions provide exercise routines, which includes step aerobics, hula-hooping and yoga.
The Wii Fit software is designed to calculate and track each player's body mass index, and weight to height ratio; that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls a "reliable indicator of body fatness for most people ... used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems."
For people, especially children, Wii Fit will be a great tool to keep exercising fun and entertaining. In the mean time consider Wii Sports as a fun way to burn some calories.
