Essential Fatty Acids

![]() | Essential fatty acids, or (EFA’s), are the “good” fats we need. They are called essential because our bodies cannot produce them from scratch. Because of this, EFA’s must be obtained through the diet. They are important because in addition to providing support for the cardiovascular, reproductive, immune, and nervous systems, they help our bodies combat damage done by too much saturated fat or Trans fatty acids. Omega-3’s and omega-6’s are essential fatty acids. Omega-9’s are beneficial fatty acids that can be produced by the body in limited amounts, but only with the presence of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. |
Deficiencies of EFA’s are linked to depression, heart attacks, cancer, stroke, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and many other diseases. We can lower our risk of these conditions by getting adequate amounts of EFA’s.
Essential fatty acids can be obtained from some seeds, nuts, legumes, and cold water fish. Due to the abundance of fast foods and processed foods in this country, many Americans do not get proper amounts of EFA’s in our diets, specifically Omega 3’s.
Here are a few tips to start incorporating EFA’s into your diet:
- Replace chips and other oily snacks with raw nuts and seeds. (High heat destroys EFA’s, so opt for raw over roasted).
- Replace margarine and butter with flaxseed or extra virgin olive oils as a topping.
- When cooking, replace butter with extra virgin olive oil (it withstands heat well).
Getting nutrients from food is always best, but if you don’t, a good supplement can help you get the nutrients you need. Omega 3-6-9 is a product that ensures a good balance of both the Omega 3 and Omega 6 families of essential fatty acids. In addition, it provides an adequate supply of the often overlooked Omega 9 family.
