Sprinting: A Great Exercise

![]() | As I watch the Olympics this year, I find myself drawn to the track and field events, specifically, the sprinting. It brings back fond memories of training for a show, when I incorporated sprinting into my workout routine twice a week. I felt powerful, and in great shape. Last week, I saw Usain Bolt set a new record for the 100 meter - 9.65 seconds! And I looked up the women’s world record for the 100 meter. Flo Jo still holds the record at 10.49 seconds. Below, you can see footage of me sprinting. It amuses me that when you compare me to an Olympic runner, it looks like I'm jogging. I was nowhere near peak condition on that day, but still. |
Sprinting is a great way to lose body fat quickly, improve your speed and strength, and change up your cardio workouts.
Here are some workouts to try out at a track:
- 1 x 400 meters - this is once around the track. Jog, don’t sprint. This is a warm up.
- 4 x 100 meters - these are sprints.
- 4 x 50 meters - these are sprints.
- Walk 1 lap around track to cool down.
- 1 x 400 meters – warm up.
- 2 x 200 meters - run these.
- 4 x 100 meters
- 4 x 50 meters
- Walk 1 lap around track to cool down.
- 1 x 400 meters - warm up.
- 2 x 100 meters
- 1 full stadium run – run up/walk down stadium steps or bleachers.
- 2 x 100 meters
- 1 full stadium run
- 2 x 100 meters
- 1 full stadium run
- Walk 1 lap around track to cool down.
- 1 x 400 meters - warm up
- 8 x 100 meter sprints
- Walk 1 lap around track to recover.
- 8x 100 meter sprints
As I always say, everyone is different, so adjust your workout according to your fitness level and the time you have available. Have fun!
