The Domino Effect

January 20, 2010 10:33 PM | Motivation | Comments (0)

Usually when we think about whether or not we want to make a lifestyle change, we think about what it means to us.  We give little thought to how it will affect others, and if we do, we think about those closest to us.

A friend of mine works in a health club.  He signs up new members.  When he talks to them about their impending lifestyle changes, he tells them they will not only improve their own lives, it will improve the lives of those they love.  For example, if Sandra gets in better shape, she’ll be around longer for her husband and kids.  She’ll lose weight, her high blood pressure will go down and she’ll no longer need medication.  So if Sandra was on the fence initially, she now thinks about her family and decides to join the gym and improve her health.  She wants to be there for her family.

The other day, my friend met a nurse who expanded this outlook.  The nurse came in to sign up for a membership.  As they were talking, she mentioned that when a patient needs CPR, she is usually the only one called.  The reason?  Because she is the only one with the strength and endurance to perform it!  With CPR, seconds count.  If others in her unit had the strength and endurance, they would also be called for CPR, thus saving precious time.  Time that the patient may or may not have.  How many more lives could have been saved if more nurses were in better shape?  This goes even further than nurses.  What about doctors, police officers, or paramedics?  Or the average Joe who knows CPR and could assist should the need arise?  What good are our skills if we are not fit to utilize them?  If we are not fit to utilize our skills, what is the detrimental effect we are having on others?

The seemingly small decisions we make now can affect people we don’t even know.  Just as the seemingly small decisions others make can affect us, or those we love.
