The South Beach Diet Review

The South Beach Diet is a popular diet followed by famous celebrities around the world.  Cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston created the South Beach Diet along with Marie Almon, a dietician, for the main purpose of helping reduce the probability of heart disease among high-risk patients.

Dr. Agatston created the diet because he noticed that even though most of the patients are reducing the amount of fat they consume, they compensate by increasing their intake of carbohydrates.

This increased carb intake leads to the increase of blood sugar that results in the cells developing resistance to insulin.  His diet circulates in the principle of replacing “bad carbs” with “good carbs” and “bad fat” with “good fat” in order to prevent this occurrence.

The diet has three phases.  Phase 1 is the most difficult phase because you will be under severe carbohydrate restriction for 14 days.  All foods that have high glycemic indexes are eliminated in the diet, replaced by other foods that are high in protein.  A huge amount of weight loss is observed in this phase, with your body losing as much as 8-13 lbs in two weeks.

Phase 3 is the re-introduction of selected food types that were restricted in Phase 1, where you are expected to lose 1-2 lbs per week.  You get to continue this phase for as long as you want until you have reached your desired body weight.  Phase 3 is the maintenance phase which you can follow for the rest of your life.  You no longer have to vigilantly check which foods are allowed and which foods you must not consume.  You have the option of eating anything that you want as long as you follow the South Beach Diet basic principles.

Like all diet programs, South Beach Diet also has some pros and cons that you have to consider.  Unlike other diets, the South Beach Diet encourages you to maintain a healthy, balanced diet that is not high in saturated fat that can increase your cholesterol levels.  You get to have regular meals along with snacks so that you will not have a problem with food cravings and hunger.  The downside of this diet is that it takes a lot of will-power to follow, most especially if you are used to eating a diet that is mainly composed of carbohydrates.

The menu can be very expensive, making the diet not-so practical for those who are under a strict budget.  And once you enter the program, it has to be followed for a lifetime for going back to your old way of eating will lead to an even faster rate of weight gain.

Hi, thanks for all the information. I've often wondered what the South Beach diet is. I don't know if you're looking for other sites that really do a good job with nutrition and fitness, or if you will consider this stepping on toes. If I'm stepping on toes, sorry, you can just delete the comment, but if you're open to suggestions- my wife and I are really happy with the program we're using through http://www.reallifeforhealth.com. Their system is really easy to use and it does everything. They have 1000's of different recipes to choose from and they help you build a fitness and nutrition plan that suits your goals. Their exercises are all made by a certified personal trainer and come with printable workout cards and details of how the exercises are done. And for the nutrition part they even send you printable daily meal plans and menus, as well as printable daily or weekly grocery lists, which are broken down by the area of the grocery store or supermarket. My wife likes that all the recipes contain 12 ingredients or less, so they are easy enough for even me to cook. I like that there's no fad diets, pills, or required supplements. Again, if I'm not stepping on any toes, I suggest you check them out. They offer a free trial anyway, so there's harm in trying.
