Spaghetti Squash - More than Meets the Eye

January 13, 2010 10:15 PM | Diet | Comments (0)

Spaghetti Squash
I tried something recently and figured I should create a post on it.  Spaghetti Squash.  I had heard of Spaghetti Squash before, but never got around to trying it.  I went to Whole Foods a short time ago looking for Butternut Squash.  I didn’t find any, but instead saw some Spaghetti Squash.  I figured I’d give it a try.  It was super easy to make; in fact, the directions were on a sticker that was placed on the squash itself.  You just cut it in half, and put the halves face down in a baking dish with a little water and bake it until it’s soft.  Once it’s done, you use a fork to pull out the “strings”.  It looks just like spaghetti.

I knew that you could actually use it in place of spaghetti in many dishes.  So I had it with Chicken Florentine, and it tasted great!

Be Careful of Your Attitude Towards Your Health

May 29, 2009 5:20 PM | Diet | Comments (0)

A few years ago a co-worker of mine (I'll call him Ed) would come to work almost every day with hamburgers, large fries and a large soda.  Ed was overweight and would sweat profusely all the time.  He always looked tired and worn out.  Ed worked second shift so when he got to work, he'd eat before the shift started.  If Ed wasn't eating hamburgers and fries, it was some other sort of junk food.  Ed didn't eat a normal portion; it was always a large portion.

One day I told Ed, "If you keep eating like that you are asking for trouble!”  Ed made the statement, "You have to go sooner or later so I'm not worried about it!”

Popular Diets Compared Part 2: The Zone, Ornish Diet, Master Cleanse

The Zone Diet

Nutritional profile: 30% fat, 30% protein, 40% carbohydrates.  This profile has more fat than I would generally recommend.  Also, this is a low calorie diet.  The website states that women are to eat 1000 to 1200 calories per day, while men are to consume between 1400 and 1600 per day.  It doesn’t take into account variations in individual calorie needs.  An interesting note is that the website states that they say “no” to processed foods, yet many of the suggested meals on the site include processed foods.

Carbohydrate Loading and Endurance Athletes

February 7, 2009 7:15 PM | Diet | Comments (1)

Athletes are always looking for ways to improve their performance.  It seems easy to find products that are marketed toward anaerobic athletes like bodybuilders or sprinters.  But what can a long distance runner do?  Carbohydrate loading is the answer.  Endurance athletes rely greatly on muscle glycogen (carbohydrates that are stored in the muscles) for energy.  If there was a way to improve the muscle’s capacity to hold glycogen, the athlete would benefit greatly.  How can we do this?  With a method called carbohydrate loading.

Essential Fatty Acids

August 28, 2008 9:39 PM | Diet | Comments (0)

Omega 3-6-9

Essential fatty acids, or (EFA’s), are the “good” fats we need.  They are called essential because our bodies cannot produce them from scratch.  Because of this, EFA’s must be obtained through the diet.

They are important because in addition to providing support for the cardiovascular, reproductive, immune, and nervous systems, they help our bodies combat damage done by too much saturated fat or Trans fatty acids.  Omega-3’s and omega-6’s are essential fatty acids.  Omega-9’s are beneficial fatty acids that can be produced by the body in limited amounts, but only with the presence of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

The Soft Drink Dilemma

February 22, 2008 9:55 PM | Diet | Comments (0)

One of the first things you can do to help improve your eating habits is to stop drinking soft drinks.  Soft drinks include sodas, punches, and juice cocktails, and they add unnecessary calories and sugar to your daily intake.  Liquid calories that go down easy will quickly sneak up on you.

In addition to the calories, the sweetness in soft drinks encourages the desire for more sweet stuff.  Most sweet snacks, for many, are a hindrance to weight loss, as they are calorie dense and nutritionally deficient.  It’s easy to see how regular soft drinks can derail your wellness and weight loss efforts.

Cloned Meat for Dinner?

January 16, 2008 11:01 PM | Diet | Comments (0)

Yesterday, the news reported that the government is on the verge of allowing meat and milk from cloned pigs and cows to be sold for food. After years of study, the FDA determined that it’s safe, insisting that products from cloned animals are no different than those of naturally bred animals.

Watchdog groups and scientists are not so sure, however, stating that defects can and do occur during the cloning process, and more investigation is needed before these products are released for mass consumption.

Juice Your Way to Good Health

January 11, 2008 9:59 PM | Diet | Comments (1)

It’s a well known fact that most of us need to eat more fruits and vegetables daily, and despite that knowledge, we still don’t do it. Some of us will eat a salad once in a while or eat a piece of fruit each day. Take me for example. I like fruit, so that’s no problem most of the time.

In all honesty, I’m not a salad person and most of the time when I eat vegetables, they’re cooked. I know I need raw vegetables but I usually don’t “feel” like eating them. So I juice them. Not only is it a super healthy drink, juicing also allows me to get in more than I would if I were eating vegetables. I’ll drink a full glass of carrot juice no problem, but I’m not likely to sit and eat 5 big, fat carrots.

Are You Insane?

December 19, 2007 5:41 PM | Diet | Exercise | Comments (1)

Someone once said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

As a trainer, I see a lot of this. People want to get in shape, but most don’t make lasting changes in their lives. The results we want are not achieved, the goals we set are not reached, and we’re right back where we started. If you want a drastic change, you must re-vamp your lifestyle. For example, if you really want to get rid of that extra back fat or that spare tire, do you really think you can do it while you continue to eat the way you currently do with only minor changes?

Fighting Childhood Obesity

December 5, 2007 8:14 PM | Diet | Comments (0)

As you watch television, more and more you’ll see shows about overweight children.  Childhood obesity is at an all time high, and it is especially alarming because it leaves children with problems typically found in adults – diabetes and high blood pressure and cholesterol, for example.

Parents get on talk shows seeking help for their overweight kids.  They usually want to know what causes childhood obesity.  In rare cases, there are genetic diseases which cause childhood obesity, but for the most part it’s caused by children eating too much and following their parents’ sedentary lifestyle.

Is Fast Food Really that Bad?

November 1, 2007 8:51 PM | Diet | Comments (0)

Whenever you talk to a personal trainer about how to improve your eating habits, one of the first things he will say is “Don’t eat fast food!” This is because if you cut it out, you automatically cut down on saturated fats, processed foods, excess sugar and unnecessary chemicals in your body.

Although we preach and teach this regularly, this advice is seldom followed because most people simply don’t think fast food is that bad. They figure if they eat it a few times a week, that’s not so bad because they work out. Take a closer look and you’ll see that eating fast food on a regular basis can derail the progress of even the most religious fitness buffs.

Sodium Nitrite in Processed Meats Maybe a Silent Killer

October 17, 2007 8:09 PM | Diet | Comments (1)

When discussing diet, a lot of people figure they’ll make their breakfast healthier by switching from regular bacon to turkey bacon. I am usually expected to discuss how great that is, but I don’t. I usually just say is that it’s good they are reducing they’re fat intake, and that I’m glad they are not eating fast food for breakfast everyday.

What do I have against turkey bacon? Turkey bacon and other processed meats (like regular bacon, hot dogs, bologna, turkey lunch meat, corned beef and others) contain sodium nitrite. Take a look at the ingredients in the meats in your refrigerator and the canned meats in your cupboard. Most people will find sodium nitrite in abundance.

Lose Weight With Your Cell Phone

August 13, 2007 10:33 PM | Diet | Exercise | Comments (0)

You maybe able to use your cell phone to lose weight!  Researchers with the PACE (Patient-centered Assessment and Counseling for Exercise and Nutrition) project at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine are working to develop and evaluate a cell phone application (mDIET) that can be used as an assessment and intervention tool to improve dietary behaviors and thus reduce weight in overweight and moderately obese (BMI 25-34.9) men and women ages 25-55.

mDiet will use cell phone technology to remind participants to eat nutritional food throughout the day and give up-to-date methods to weight loss and lifestyle changes.
