Cell Phone Usage May Cause Hearing Loss

September 27, 2007 7:50 PM | Healthcare | Comments (1)

There have been numerous research reports claiming that cell phone usage doesn't cause any physical harm. However, now there are concerns about the impact of cell phone on hearing.

As many people age they may find it more difficult to hear.  Some hearing loss is due to overexposure of noise. However, a new research study is claiming that hearing loss can also be blamed on cell phones. (See Video) The study claims that people who use cell phones for about an hour per day had a harder time hearing high frequency sounds, especially in their right ear where most people tend to hold their cell phones.

What is Prediabetes?

September 24, 2007 8:50 PM | Healthcare | Comments (0)

Diabetes is one of the most common conditions in the United States, with almost 20 million Americans living with the type 2 form of the disease. But there are many millions more people with blood sugar levels that are high, but not high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. This is known as prediabetes, and carries with it an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

An estimated 41 million Americans between the ages of 40 and 74 have prediabetes according to the CDC, but its prevalence is growing in younger Americans as the obesity epidemic spreads.

Health care is a Right not a Privilege
I recently watched "Sicko", a documentary released by Award-winning film director Michael Francis Moore who also produced “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11”.

Sicko is Mr. Moore’s most recent documentary that highlights the problems and catastrophes with the American Healthcare system. The film profiles several ordinary Americans whose lives have been disrupted, shattered and in some cases ended because of the healthcare catastrophe.

Fluoride May Be Dangerous to Your Health

August 29, 2007 2:36 PM | Cancer | Healthcare | Comments (1)

According to a study by Cancer Causes and Control, an online peer-review journal of Harvard University, drinking fluoridated water causes osteosarcoma, a rare malignant bone tumor.  The study found an association between fluoride levels in drinking water during childhood and osteosarcoma for males diagnosed before age 20 years.

In a potential cover up, Harvard University officials and Federal investigators wanted to determine whether a Harvard professor hid research suggesting a link between fluoridated tap water and bone cancer in adolescent boys.

Lifespan of Americans Falling Behind Other Countries

August 13, 2007 7:02 PM | Healthcare | Comments (0)

Something is wrong with this scenario. The richest country on the planet that spends the most on healthcare is decreasing in international rankings for life expectancy.  Life expectancy in the United States is surpassed by Japan, most of Europe, Jordan, Guam and the Cayman Islands. Although Americans are living longer than before, they are not living as long as 41 other countries.

A baby born in the United States in 2004 will live an average of 77.9 years, however, the life expectancy ranks 42nd which is down from 11th just 20 years ago.  These numbers are according to international numbers provided by the Census Bureau and domestic numbers from the National Center for Health Statistics.

Why Everyone Should Exercise

June 8, 2007 7:31 PM | Exercise | Healthcare | Your Body | Comments (2)

Everyone should exercise!  It only makes sense.  Exercise benefits your health.

However, if you do exercise and experience chest pain, dizziness, extreme shortness of breath, persistent pain in your legs or joints while exercising, or any other physical condition that just doesn’t seem right, this may indicate a problem.  Stop exercising and see your doctor before continuing.

Assuming you are healthy, regular physical activity has many benefits other than making you fit.

Steps You Can Take To Prevent Cancer

June 8, 2007 12:08 PM | Cancer | Healthcare | Comments (0)

It’s a sad truth that cancer kills over ½ million people in the United States for the last several years.  Cancer is the second cause of death, exceeded only by heart diseases. (See article on protecting your heart).

Lung cancer is the most common fatal cancer in men (31%), followed by prostate (9%), and colon & rectum (9%).  Lung cancer is the most common cause for women.  In women, lung (26%), breast (15%), and colon & rectum (10%) are the leading sites of cancer death.

American Culture is Designed for Your Health to Fail

June 6, 2007 3:06 PM | Healthcare | Comments (0)

When I was in college, I would often see freshmen students start their first day of school with great intentions. When asked their major, they would proudly state; “I’m studying engineering!”, “I’m studying computer science”, or “I’m studying nursing”. But many freshmen students, after a few semesters, would change their major to something easier, drop out, or get kicked out of college.

It always seemed to me that kids who go away to college (as opposed to staying home) were entering a system that would allow them to fail if they weren’t careful.

Do You Follow the 7 Good Health Practices?

May 30, 2007 9:24 PM | Education | Healthcare | Your Body | Comments (0)

Are you following the 7 good health practices?  According to a 15 year study of more than 6,900 people, researchers found that following 7 basic health habits were a good predictor of how long people lived.

People with 6 to 7 of the good health practices, lived 7 to 12 years longer than people with less than 4.

The 7 Good Health Practices are as follows:

Follow Your Body's Preventative Maintenance Schedule

Most people want to be successful in whatever they decide to with their lives.  A measure of success to most people is the ability to attain material objects (house, car, clothes, jewelry, etc).  Whether or not you want to be wealthy, there is usually a desire to have a certain lifestyle which requires material objects.  So we work hard to attain these things.

Humans value stuff.  But it’s so ironic that most of us do not value the thing we should value the most and that’s ourselves.

Staying Healthy is Money in the Bank

Most people get their healthcare insurance from their jobs. Large companies offer health insurance to employees at a reasonable price, and it’s deducted from their paychecks without a second thought.

However, if a person loses their job or becomes ill and can’t work anymore, that person loses their healthcare insurance. Sure, companies offer COBRA (they have to by law), but the payments are much higher than before.
