Q and A: What can I do to firm my flabby arms?

September 18, 2008 10:05 PM | Q & A | Your Body | Comments (0)

The answer to this depends on why you consider your arms “flabby”.  Do you have excess skin?  Do you need to firm up the muscle and/or lose body fat?

When people ask me about this, they usually hold their arm out and shake it – in order to show me how flabby it is.  This is not a good way to determine your true “flab”.   I say this because even muscle moves when it’s relaxed.  Find the buffest person you can.  Ask them to relax their arm and shake it.  Even if it’s Lou Ferrigno, that arm will shake!

Bone Density Awareness: Not Just For Women

May 13, 2008 7:17 PM | Your Body | Comments (1)

bone density
Bone density is a topic usually geared toward women, but it’s actually a concern for men, too.  Although it may seem otherwise, bone is living tissue.  It is constantly breaking down and rebuilding itself.  As we age, our bone breaks down more than it rebuilds, and this leads to decreased bone density.  Decreased bone density can lead to osteoporosis and fractures.

Preventative medicine is best, and there are some things we can do to maintain better bone density as we get older.

Finding Your Somatotype

February 4, 2008 9:35 PM | Your Body | Comments (2)

Part of the way you look can be controlled by exercise and eating habits. The other part is genetics. People are classified using 3 different body types, called somatotypes. This method of classification was developed by scientist W.H. Sheldon. As you read ahead, know that most likely you will be a combination of somatotypes. Most people have one type that is dominant, while still displaying some characteristics of the other two. The average person may display characteristics of all 3 somewhat evenly.

Study Finds Obesity is Socially Contagious

July 25, 2007 9:15 PM | Your Body | Comments (0)

According to a recent New England Journal of Medicine study funded by the National Institute on Aging, obesity is "socially contagious" and can spread easily from person to person.

The study found that social ties seem to play a strong role in obesity, even more than genes.  The chances of becoming obese went up 57 percent if a friend is obese, 40 percent if a sibling is obese and 37 percent if a spouse is obese. In the closest friendships, the risk almost tripled. This may explain why men gain weight when their pregnant wives or girlfriends gain weight.

Ever Considered an Online Personal Trainer?

June 27, 2007 7:35 PM | Exercise | Your Body | Comments (0)

Having a personal trainer to get you back in shape is a great investment.  After all, what is more important than your health?  Many times people join gyms and change their diet with the intention of getting in shape.  They go to the gym several times a week and after a few weeks become discouraged, unmotivated or bored with the whole process.  They may not know how to properly and safely exercise or which exercises to complete to be successful.  They trot from machine to machine haphazardly doing several random exercises.  They have no plan to accomplish their goals.

Why Everyone Should Exercise

June 8, 2007 7:31 PM | Exercise | Healthcare | Your Body | Comments (2)

Everyone should exercise!  It only makes sense.  Exercise benefits your health.

However, if you do exercise and experience chest pain, dizziness, extreme shortness of breath, persistent pain in your legs or joints while exercising, or any other physical condition that just doesn’t seem right, this may indicate a problem.  Stop exercising and see your doctor before continuing.

Assuming you are healthy, regular physical activity has many benefits other than making you fit.

How To Determine Your Healthy Weight

May 31, 2007 6:38 PM | Education | Your Body | Comments (0)

To properly determine your healthy weight isn't just getting a scale. The best way to determine a your healthy weight is to determine such body composition tests as percent body fat, waist to hip ratio, and body mass index, in addition to traditional height-weight measures. These tests, taken together, are much more accurate than just looking at weight.

Determine Your Body Mass Index Rating
Body mass index (BMI) refers to relative weight for height for both adult men and women and is used as a measuring tool for future disease risk.

Protect Your Body's Engine - The Heart

May 29, 2007 8:55 PM | Education | Your Body | Comments (0)

Protect your heart. The heart is your body's engine. Without it, the body stops (dies). Just like a car, without its engine, the car shuts down. Heart disease is a highly preventable disease; however, it remains the U.S. leading cause of death, killing one person every 34 seconds, or more than 2,500 people per day.

The purpose of the heart is to pump life-sustaining oxygen and nutrients to 300 trillion cells throughout your body, 24 hours per day, 70 to 80 times per minute.

Follow Your Body's Preventative Maintenance Schedule

May 24, 2007 7:42 PM | Healthcare | Your Body | Comments (1)

Most people want to be successful in whatever they decide to with their lives.  A measure of success to most people is the ability to attain material objects (house, car, clothes, jewelry, etc).  Whether or not you want to be wealthy, there is usually a desire to have a certain lifestyle which requires material objects.  So we work hard to attain these things.

Humans value stuff.  But it’s so ironic that most of us do not value the thing we should value the most and that’s ourselves.

What is BMI and How is it Calculated?

April 10, 2007 4:35 PM | Cancer | Your Body | Comments (0)

Body mass index (BMI) refers to relative weight for height for both adult men and women and is used as a measuring tool for future disease risk.

A BMI of 30 or higher is linked to increased risks for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and arthritis. A high BMI, however, may not be a risk if it’s due to high muscle mass, which is common in bodybuilders.

A high BMI for women increases the risk for serious pre-cancerous polyps or cancer found during their colonoscopies.  Obese women are at especially high risk.

The More You Put In, The More You Get Out

March 10, 2007 11:21 PM | Diet | Exercise | Your Body | Comments (0)

The combination for getting in better shape is simple:  You need proper diet, cardio, and strength training.  How do I lose 50 pounds? With proper diet, cardio, and strength training.  I just had a baby, how do I bounce back?  With proper diet, cardio, and strength training. How do I build muscle?  With proper diet, cardio, and strength training.

The answer is always the same; there are just different ways to go about it.
