Hi, I try to eat a lot of good lean protein, and tuna is one of my favorites. How much can I eat per week before I should worry about mercury content?

Hi, I am 17 years old fat boy like 160pounds. My diet includes less then 500 calories a day, and over 45 minutes of exercise daily as well. I drink 8-12 glass of cold water a day, I drink nothing but water and I am also a vegan. yesterday I had only half of a banana and half a small bowl of soup and today I had a bowl of cereal and a nut bar and quarter of an apple but I have not been eating for so long that when I eat I feel ill and feel like throwing up. In this way I am getting lose 8pounds averagely in a week. What is your opinion? Please suggest me for alternative way.

Richa,
You definitely are not eating enough, and that is why you're not feeling well. If you were to continue on this path, you will eventually stop losing weight because your body will go into starvation mode and try to store most of what you eat, even if it's not much. Also, since you are exercising, your body needs enough fuel to endure the workout. At this point, you are burning muscle when you exercise. You need to gradually increase your calorie intake to roughly 2000 calories. I know that sounds like a lot compared to what you've been doing, but don't be afraid to eat. It's WHAT you eat that will make a difference. Make sure you aren't eating much junk food or fast food. Eat whole grains, lean proteins, fresh fruit and vegetables.
Here is a link to an article that does a good job of explaining what's happening to you:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/core_march_8.htm
For your exercise, make sure you are including both weight training and cardio. Weight training will build the muscle back that you lost. Also keep in mind, the more muscle you have, the harder it is to gain body fat.
I hope this helps,

Hi Kim,
As a general guideline, you want to stay around 12 oz of seafood per week. Because different foods have varying amounts of mercury, it's good to mix it up so that some of the seafood you're eating contains less mercury than the tuna.
To be more specific, the FDA has set a limit for human consumption of mercury. That limit is 1ppm (part per million). Tuna generally has .35 ppm. Keep in mind that larger species of tuna have higher levels of mercury, and light tuna has a little less than albacore.
With that said, your best bet is to enjoy tuna in moderation. But don't worry - if you feel you've eaten too much one week, you can eat less the next, as it takes more than 1 week to cause your mercury levels to rise.
Hope that helps,

Access eating in every food stuff is always harmful for the body as well as health. It is also important in the pregnancy and eat that shellfish that are lower in mercury. It is okay to eat 12 oz of low mercury light tuna per week.

Which types of fish have the less mercury or risk of mercury? I would think trout would be the best since they can only survive in very clean and clear rivers and streams. I know tuna and salmon are really high in nutrients but wouldn't they be at less of a risk of containing mercury compared to shellfish or bottom feeding fish?

Over eating of all the food is always harmful to the body and health. It is also important during pregnancy and consumption of shellfish that are lower in mercury. It is normal to eat 12 grams of tuna a week with low mercury light.

I prefer exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet to lose weight. Diet pills that I fear, though many of the health risk or not say. For the most part, I think diet pills increase heart rate and makes you nervous as a very pleasant drink coffee beverages and energy.

Its up to age and your body structure, Canned light tuna is skip jack Chunk, usually a relatively small species and short duration. They do not have much time in their short lifespan (two to three years) to build huge amounts of mercury. The larger species that lived longer (albacore, for example) have more mercury in their tissues because they eat smaller fish in time and thus build up the mercury.

Other people told me that I should limit my intake of tuna. I shouldn't at least eat tuna everyday. There are other lean meat products to eat, so I don't just rely on tuna.
