Have you been doing the same workout, or a minor variation on it, for months, or even years? If so, you may notice that you are not making gains like you used to. You know what they say: “Variety is the spice of life.” That saying is especially true when it comes to the gains you want to make with your workouts. You have to add some variety to your workout routine in order to keep the gains coming. It’s time to get your muscles confused.

What Is Muscle Confusion?

You won’t have to pretend to be someone else or tell your muscles riddles to achieve muscle confusion. Besides, that would probably get you some strange looks in the weight room.

Core Training and Ab Workouts: What's the Difference?

July 5, 2010 8:10 PM | Abs | Comments (0)

core-training.PNG

These days, core training and ab workouts are thought of as synonymous but in actuality, they are two totally different things. An ab workout is actually just a part of a core workout, which consists of a number of exercises that will tone both the upper and lower body.

The core of the body is actually the body’s center of gravity and core exercises will help to stabilize the body and the hips, giving you a much better range of movement.

Why is Stretching So Important?

May 4, 2010 5:04 PM | Exercise | Comments (4)

One of the most important aspects of any workout routine is stretching.  Stretches should be done before the exercise routine to help prevent injury during the routine, as well as after the routine to aid in the recovery of your muscles.

The proper way to execute a stretch is to move slowly into position and hold it for at least 10 seconds.  You should never bounce down into a stretch, because bouncing can lead to muscle tears and discomfort.  Some discomfort is normal when stretching, but if you feel pain you should stop your stretch immediately.

Exercises for Grandma and Grandpa

May 4, 2010 4:37 PM | Exercise | Comments (0)

Exercise can be very beneficial for senior citizens, yet there are several precautions that should be taken first.  Everyone has an individual level of fitness and this is true with senior citizens.  Making sure that you work out on a regular basis is of the utmost importance, but first take into account that you might have certain conditions that will directly impact the amount of activity your perform.

Beginning a new workout might seem difficult at first, but if you commit yourself to exercising on a regular basis for at least thirty days, you will be amazed at the difference you will see.

How Type 2 Diabetes Patients Benefit from Exercise

March 25, 2010 2:08 PM | Diabetes | Comments (0)

It is quite easy to manage diabetes when you incorporate a program for exercise in your daily routine. Such exercises have been shown to have positive effects for people who are suffering from diabetes, especially those who have low glucose levels. One example is exercise being able to channel muscle energy, convert it into glucose and then using that glucose as fuel. At the start of it, the body will just use the glucose that has been converted into glycogen from one’s muscles. Glucose is also found in your bloodstream. If you maintain a long term exercise program, it is highly likely that the levels of your blood glucose will not dip. Also, glucagon and other hormones found in your body will also be released. These hormones and glucagon work together and break down all of the liver’s stored fat and then converting such stored fat into more glucose.

The Domino Effect

January 20, 2010 10:33 PM | Motivation | Comments (0)

Usually when we think about whether or not we want to make a lifestyle change, we think about what it means to us.  We give little thought to how it will affect others, and if we do, we think about those closest to us.

A friend of mine works in a health club.  He signs up new members.  When he talks to them about their impending lifestyle changes, he tells them they will not only improve their own lives, it will improve the lives of those they love.  For example, if Sandra gets in better shape, she’ll be around longer for her husband and kids.  She’ll lose weight, her high blood pressure will go down and she’ll no longer need medication.  So if Sandra was on the fence initially, she now thinks about her family and decides to join the gym and improve her health.  She wants to be there for her family.

Spaghetti Squash - More than Meets the Eye

January 13, 2010 10:15 PM | Diet | Comments (0)

Spaghetti Squash
I tried something recently and figured I should create a post on it.  Spaghetti Squash.  I had heard of Spaghetti Squash before, but never got around to trying it.  I went to Whole Foods a short time ago looking for Butternut Squash.  I didn’t find any, but instead saw some Spaghetti Squash.  I figured I’d give it a try.  It was super easy to make; in fact, the directions were on a sticker that was placed on the squash itself.  You just cut it in half, and put the halves face down in a baking dish with a little water and bake it until it’s soft.  Once it’s done, you use a fork to pull out the “strings”.  It looks just like spaghetti.

I knew that you could actually use it in place of spaghetti in many dishes.  So I had it with Chicken Florentine, and it tasted great!

Description, Symptoms and Treatment of Panic Attacks

August 28, 2009 3:00 PM | Education | Video | Comments (0)

Panic Attack
It's estimated that one out of every 75 people experience panic attacks which is a serious disorder.  Panic Disorders usually appear during the teens or early adulthood.  The exact cause of panic attacks is unclear, however, there seem to be a connection to major life events that are potentially stressful, such as having a first child, getting married, attending college, starting a job, etc.  There is also some evidence that there is a genetic predisposition to panic attacks; such as a family member has suffered from panic disorder.

So what exactly is a panic attack?
A panic attack is a sudden surge of fear that can be overwhelming without cause or warning.  It is way more intense than feeling stressed out that many people experience.   (See video below).

An unhealthy digestive system can lead to a variety of medical problems which include colon cancer, diarrhea, halitosis, constipation, bleeding from the digestive tract, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing. However, keep in mind that more general symptoms like nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, and loss of appetite, may suggest a digestive disorder or another type of disorder that will require you to see your doctor immediately.

Be Careful of Your Attitude Towards Your Health

May 29, 2009 5:20 PM | Diet | Comments (0)

A few years ago a co-worker of mine (I'll call him Ed) would come to work almost every day with hamburgers, large fries and a large soda.  Ed was overweight and would sweat profusely all the time.  He always looked tired and worn out.  Ed worked second shift so when he got to work, he'd eat before the shift started.  If Ed wasn't eating hamburgers and fries, it was some other sort of junk food.  Ed didn't eat a normal portion; it was always a large portion.

One day I told Ed, "If you keep eating like that you are asking for trouble!”  Ed made the statement, "You have to go sooner or later so I'm not worried about it!”
